Rachel Forster has always been ‘just Lord Barnham’s sister’ – quiet, dutiful – and totally frustrated. But now Rachel is thirty-one years’ old, newly independent - and at a crossroads in her life. It is time for her to emerge from out of her grand relations’ shadows and decide on where she really wants to go. But how can she possibly take command of her own life after so many years in a dependent role? Who ever might she find to assist her? In this stand-alone Regency romance which also forms the final book in the ‘Lord Barnham’ trilogy Rachel surprises herself – and many other people – by making some choices that she never, ever, expected to have to face.

First, let me say that I have very mixed feelings about this book. The very fact that the work was powerful enough to give me those feelings merits a 5 star rating. But this book was not a comfortable read at all. If you like fluffy, romantic comedy regencies, this book is not for you. It examines aspects of human nature that I for one would rather not face when reading for entertainment. Which of course makes me feel guilty, hence the uncomfortable.

I hated this book because of Mr. Halliwell. I detested him. I don't care if he was sincere, I don't care if he truly meant what he said, I don't care if he really was a benevolent man, he was a villain to me. He never stopped to think about Rachel's feelings. He saw her as a means to an end. I don't care if he was right according to the big picture, he was wrong for Rachel. I also hated Rachel's weakness for him. She could never say no to anything he wanted, even if it went completely against everything she wanted or believed in. I hated that the author never let her stand up to him.

Instead of becoming a strong heroine in her own right, he dies. Almost a martyr. Only after she is away from him does she question herself and determine who she is, why she fell prey to him, and what it all really meant. She is not a strong heroine and that disappointed me. She could have stood up to him, talked about him with someone to try and understand if that was what she wanted, but she doesn't. Weak.

The reasons I loved it were: Excellent writing - this author is extremely talented, perfect historical atmosphere, the hero. It was slow going for awhile on that last front. I dreaded for the longest time over who would prove to be the actual hero of the price, but when he finally emerged it was lovely. I will make one critique first, I wish he would have fought for her. Early on I had hopes for the Hero, but nothing came of it for the longest time. Rachel was so distracted by everything else. I know not all men can be the forceful arrogant types, but if this hero had shown just a little more backbone during Rachel's initial engagement, given her some other standard to hold up as a comparison, I would have been more than content. But just like Rachel's overall weakness as a character, the hero's reluctance to put himself forward disappointed me. He was so perfect in every other way.

A very uncomfortable, but surprisingly very enjoyable Read. Highly recommended for readers of all genres who don't mind being taken out of their comfort zone.

Mr Halliwell Mission edition by Lizzie Church Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Very enjoyable read
I have read almost all of Lizzie Church's books. I loved them all. I did not dislike this one but found it a little tedious at times. I had trouble reading the title character's words. The words were written like someone with his background would have spoken. So, I think it was probably just me. I still think Ms. Church is an exceptional writer. Her style is very reminiscent of Jane Austen. I have two more of her books to read and will do so soon.
This is the finale of Lord Barnham's Trilogy. It can be read as a stand-alone novel, or after reading the first two novels in the trilogy. This series started out with the second story in this trilogy- The Girl From Red Lion Square- which I absolutely loved. The second story published was Mr. Forster's Fortune, which went back in time seven years to give us a view of some of the characters from TGFRLS earlier in life.

The finale centers around Rachel, Lord Barnham's sister. In this story, Rachel comes of age (at 31) and makes some important decisions regarding how she wants to live the rest of her life. This novel, like TGFRLS, sheds light on one of less romantic aspects of the Regency Period- the contrast between the extreme poverty of the working class and the extreme wealth of the Quality.

Rachel is deeply affected by the poor living conditions endured by many men, women, and children who work for low wages (or not at all) after she has a chance meeting with Mr. Halliwell who has devoted his life to helping the poor. She also develops a close friendship with a brother and sister while visiting York with her mother. Lord Barnham and Celia (TGFRLS) also are featured in this story, and we see a glimpse of their lives together. By the conclusion of this novel- which also sees the end of the Regency Period- each of the characters find closure in their lives on different levels and can look forward to new beginnings.

In my opinion, the best novel of the trilogy remains The Girl From Red Lion Square. I re-read TGFRLS after reading the second novel published- MFF- and enjoyed looking at the characters in a new light and seeing how they had become who they were based upon how life had changed them over the seven year period since MFF. I liked the fact that Rachel finally was the center of attention in this novel because I really like her as a character. However, neither this novel, nor MFF, in my opinion, matched the magic of TGFRLS. If you enjoyed either or both of the other two novels in this trilogy, then you should read this one in order to catch up with what has been happening with the other characters, including Lord Barnham and his family.

I am giving this novel four stars for fans of this trilogy. I didn't love this novel, but it did keep me guessing as to what was going to happen next, and whether some of the characters were who they seemed to be- so it held my interest. Fans of Lord Barnham should read this final novel in the series to see what happens with their favorite characters. Each reader of this trilogy will have their favorite, I am sure, and mine remains The Girl From Red Lion Square.
