An awful lot of navigation hasn't changed since 1884 despite all our new toys. You probably don't need to know all these details - as long as your toys keep working, but they do fill a huge void. Learning the nitty-gritty and the historic details can change one's navigation from a matter of faith that everything will work and is all right to a matter of trust that a particular set of known details will lead to a particular result. This is an interesting book on navigation ruined by the incredibly bad construction of the book itself. It fell apart on the first reading.
This book is a goldmine for anybody with a deep interest in terrestrial and astro navigation. Not a book for beginners it covers a lot of special situations that navigators had know once upon a time. History and navigation combined.

The publisher used an optical character scanner to "read" this classic text so it could be reformatted and printed in this new edition.
The optical scanner misread so many characters (especially numbers and symbols, which are critical to navigation) that the book is only marginally useful. This book is rather expensive. The price far exceeds its value.
Having been a mariner for years and interested in navigation found this book to be a joy. Written by a mariner in the late 1800's. Astro navigation is highlighted in a different way and excellant explanation on compass adjusting. Could easily overwhelm.
