This book is classified as a suspense romance but I would lean more on the suspense side. Sure there is some romance but it is not the normal romance and it is not a light read. This book has darkness.“Madness is a place where your soul goes to die. Insanity becomes a safe haven for your devastated mind - your crushed soul - a place where you can wither away until there’s nothing left, not a glimmer of the person you once were.”
Riley had a happy life, wonderful loving family, she was able to travel the world until she comes home and has her world ripped away. Her family is taken, tortured and killed in front of her. She wasn’t suppose to survive, but she did and wishes she hadn’t.
“Grief is like a cancer,” she (the doctor) says as she starts to wash me. “It eats away at all the good memories. It strips you down until you feel like giving up is the only way out.”
Griffin has failed his team, most of all Josh, Riley’s brother. Why couldn't he protect Josh's family? He will do what he has to do to protect Riley and keep his promise to Josh? At all costs ? Will he be able to live up to this task? Will he be able to keep her safe? Or will he fail josh again?
The author did a wonderful job allowing the reader to experience all the emotions that Riley has to deal with since she came home. The reader is lead on a roller coaster of emotions as Riley goes from a carefree girl to witnessing the torture and death of her parents and two brothers. With lines like:
“My thoughts are all jumbled. It feels like I’m trying to navigate my way through a maze of thorns. Every thorn has the power to hurt me. Every thorn represents a memory".
You are right there grieving with her.
The interactions with the other characters brings even more depth to the story. Their interactions helps Riley try to deal, let alone understand why this had to happen.
“Mr. Perry is right. Whether it’s a body part or a loved one, the void the loss leaves in your life is devastating to the point that you’ll never feel whole again.”
Griffin is lost as well and blames himself for what has happened to Riley and her family. As you watch this strong alpha guy deal with the fallout of these events, you will be speechless. At times his promise seems to be too much and at times he feels he can conquer the world especially when he tells Riley that they can be a mess together.
Emotions are high in this book and it will pull you in from the beginning and keep you reading until the end. There are several surprises and twists in the story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. All can say without spoiling anything in this book is that this is a must read and you will not be disappointed.

Okay, its been a couple of days since I read Protector and I'm reeling in from it.
This book is a romantic suspense written beautifully.
This book is a standalone novel about Riley and Griffin (I love his name by the way haha).
Riley, has always been this happy girl growing up, being close with her parents and brothers. Until one day, her entire world is ripped away from her.
Griffin, a friend of her brother has been part of Riley's earlier life.
When Riley's world is taken away in an instant, Griffin is her saviour. Her Protector
My heart broke for Riley. I loved the way Griffin always protected her.
Michelle always writes stories that keeps her readers on the edge of their seat. This wasnt any different.

I WAS MESMERIZED, HORRIFIED & HOOKED ALL AT THE SAME TIME. AUTHOR MICHELLE HORST WAS ABLE TO TRANSPORT ME RIGHT ALONGSIDE OF THE HEROINE, RILEY, AND I THANK HER FOR THAT.
Author Michelle Horst was able to somehow transport me into the darkness alongside Riley. From the very first chapter I was mesmerized, horrified & hooked all at the same time.
It was like I didn’t want to look but couldn’t look away. I was afraid to read more. I remember I kept my hand over my mouth thinking no no no, this can’t be happening, especially to her mother. Wondering what it would be like to witness the worst possible things imaginable. I kept picturing my own family, their faces, in Riley’s family’s place. Then my tears flowed heavily right along with Riley.
The detail in which those scenes were written were done brilliantly and must have been so difficult for the author to write. She has earned my respect for her ability to draw you in and keep hold of you with her gritty, frightening and vivid descriptions of those horrifying events. Horrifying events that continue throughout the book. I’ll be talking about this book for a long time to come. I had to stop and grab my pen and paper and write down those feelings going through me.
So, after I cleared my head, I took a deep breath, pulled up my big girl panties, wiped my eyes and forged ahead because I knew that if I put this book down I would not pick it back up and what a disservice to the author that would be by not riding along with Riley & Griffin through their journey all the way to its conclusion, however hard that might be.
I am so glad I took this journey. By far, Protector is the best romantic suspense book that I have EVER read. I will NEVER forget this harrowing story about the acceptance of loss of epic proportions, courage, forgiveness, healing, hope, love and most importantly, appreciating those who mean the most to you whether related by blood or not and doing whatever it takes to find solace and hope for a future filled with the kind of love that was lost in this book.
All the characters were in my opinion, riveting and sunk their claws into you. Especially, Charlie and his role in the book. WOW. Amelia, and the rest of the gang but most importantly, the role of Griffin, the promise he made and his finding forgiveness within himself and ultimately finding solace and love with the one person he believes he failed…. Riley.
I’ll end this review by thanking Michelle Horst for writing such a wonderful, powerful, suspenseful gripping story and for taking me on one of the best reads ever!
