"I never want to hurt you. You get that, right?"
Skylar knows Rafael wants something very specific from him--and Skylar wants him to have it. Convincing Rafael is going to take some serious innovation. Skylar lost his voice twelve years ago to the Nettlebush Indian Reserve's first and last serial killer. That serial killer was Rafael's father.
Rafael's father, Skylar learns, isn't the problem. Something else happened when Skylar survived that blustery summer night. Something Skylar never thought twice about. Something Rafael can't look past.
The Supreme Court ruling on Kelo v. New London changes the face of US property laws, plunging the reservation into an insidious tug-of-war between the Bureau of Land Management and the Plains Shoshone who have called the soil home for centuries. History, Skylar realizes, is repeating itself. Their parents powerless, the law their enemy, Skylar and his friends are going to have to get creative if they want to keep what's left of their land.

St. Clair is the third book in the Gives Light series by Rose Christo. This was another emotional read and I have to say this one had me more emotional than the other two. So many ups and downs had me ready to cry. Things Skylar went through as just so unfair. His story in this one was a lot tougher.Skylar and Rafael are the strongest thing in this book. They have been such a strong couple and I love that fact. It would be sad to think of them not together. In St. Clair their relationships develops and becomes more mature. It was not detailed, more fade into black. But you knew what happened. I liked how Rose Christo wrote the development. Every book the relationships advances that little bit more.
Skylar's dad featured a lot in this one too. He had to make a sacrifice to ensure everyone had a home at the end of the day. In a way this was the most political book in the series. It was heavy on the legal stuff as well as the more emotional things in the series. I enjoyed the read and found myself engrossed in it. Even some things I would not normally find interesting in a book, in this I found all fitted well and made me want more.
I never thought this series could shock me. But this book did. Skylar's health issues were not expected in my plan for the series. I knew there were 4 books when I started and that this was supposed to be the last one, but when he was diagnosed with The big C, I was shocked beyond belief. All I could think about was cuddling Skylar and Rafael and never letting them go again. There was also an incredibly cute scene!
I would say through the ups and downs in the book I was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. A lot of amazing things happened and a lot of sad things happened. But at the end of the day the book developed and the characters grew. I wanted more and more of these boys, I love them so much.
Highly recommend this series.

St Clair Gives Light Series Book 3 edition by Rose Christo indelibleCHAOS Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book makes you stop and think in a good way. I don't know if the facts are true or not but it makes you think. The series is written well with great character development. I read book four first and then read book one two and three. I wish there were a book between three and four to show their college life.
This series is excellent reading material. You will get to follow the lives of Skylar and Rafael on a Reservation for Native Americans. The story is a coming of age story for two young men and how they successfully meet the added challenges of reservation life. The author has a style that make you feel as if you are one of the characters observing this story as it unfolds over the years. Read all the books in the series to get the complete story. It is well worth the effort and I highly recommend it.
Skylar and Rafael continue their journey growing closer together. The third book in the series still held my interest. I felt like I was caught up between a history class and a boys coming of age. The writing continues to be solid. 4.5 for borrowed books.
It is apt that the final book of Christo's trilogy is entitled "St Clare", since this book wraps up several storylines to establish Skylar's finding his `voice', his calling / life focus, his sense of self, his raison d'etre (although not without much upheaval - both internal and external). His relationship with Raphael triggers traumatic memories which resurface for Skylar - ones that don't have anything to do with Raphael's murderous father. External political forces (FBI) converge upon sleepy Nettlebush Reservation with brutal force, in order to drive Skylar's father out from hiding, and they will stop at nothing, even the dissolution of the entire reservation to get their man.
Will Skylar rise above a trapped helplessness and find an inner fortitude and strength to protect those whom he loves? Can he develop a `voice' to speak out against the many injustices faced by himself and his people? Can Skylar overcome shame and fear to find safety and refuge in the arms of the man he loves? This book concludes with a mystical dreamlike sequence which may puzzle some readers - yet I found there themes of courage and hope - both for Skylar and his people.
All 3 books in the series moved me to tears emotionally but there were also occasions where I burst out laughing. As someone unexposed to any version of the history of US white-native interactions, I was shocked by some events, I was outraged by the treatment meted out to a marginalised people, I was also deeply inspired by the resilience and hope of these same people.
The Rose Christo trilogy books are not to be missed.
Wow, how did I not find this series sooner! These books are amazing! The story is so well thought out, and really grips you from the beginning. I really loved the history that was woven into the story. I have always loved Native American culture, so naturally I just soaked up the stories, legends, and history told. Then there's Skylar and Rafael, oh lord, they have made themselves right at home at the top of my favorite list! Their relationship and how it evolves is so precious. I loved how Skylar would catch Rafael staring at him, and through the writing, you just knew how Rafael felt about him. Not to mention his love for books, and his drawing... loved when Skylar would look over at him, and his nose would be in a book, or he would be drawing... obvious to the world, around him. But always knew what Skylar was doing, or thinking. Skylar is just adorable, there is no other word I can describe him as. Having no voice, he is always smiling, always concerned about everyone else. So sweet, and innocent. Their relationship is a slow process, but so enjoyable to read. The story involves everyone on the Reservation, and you can't help but love everyone.
This series is really a amazing read, the writing is fabulous, Rose Christo is an amazing story teller, and advocate. She really sheds light on the many issues plaguing her people, and after learning about these (more then horrifying) issues, I was very eager to go off and read more, and sign the petitions she offered.
Highly recommend this series, and anything by Rose Christo! And $2.99 for over 5,000 locations is awesome!
